THE NEW TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 70 SERIES

The next evolution of the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 rolls out with a brand-new powertrain option, alongside enhancements in styling, tech, and specification.

According to Glenn Crompton, the Vice President of Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM), the upgraded Land Cruiser 70 Series caters to a diverse clientele seeking rugged yet capable 4x4s.

Crompton emphasises: “The addition of a new powertrain not only broadens the appeal of the 70 Series to a wider audience but also gives our customers the power of choice between the torque-rich four-cylinder automatic and the tried-and-true manual V8 across all 70 Series body styles, providing a wide range of alternatives for buyers.”

Under the bonnet, the Land Cruiser 70 Series receives a significant upgrade. The 1GD 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, marking a notable departure from tradition. Producing a robust 150 kW at 3 400 rpm and a hefty 500 Nm of torque from 1 600-2 800 rpm, promising unparalleled performance across any terrain.

Retaining its legendary off-road capabilities, the Land Cruiser 70 Series boasts a part-time 4×4 system with low-range gearing, durable live axles, and front coil suspension. Additionally, four-cylinder models are equipped with front and rear locking differentials, enhancing traction in challenging conditions.

From the outside the updated Land Cruiser 70 Series is a blend of modernity and heritage. With a new square grille featuring a black mesh pattern and ‘TOYOTA’ lettering, inspired by previous generations. Paired with a wide bumper, black over-fenders, and dark grey metallic 16-inch alloy wheels, it commands presence on and off the road.

Inside, practicality meets comfort with a redesigned centre console and versatile second-row seats in Station Wagon variants. Upholstered in durable grey fabric or leather, depending on the grade, the interior boasts quality and functionality.

Technological upgrades include features such as Downhill Assist Control (DAC) for off-road descents and a reversing camera for convenience during parking.

Available in a classic colour palette, the Land Cruiser 70 Series is backed by Toyota’s renowned reliability and durability, with a three-year/100 000 km warranty and optional service plan, making it a formidable choice for adventurers seeking the ultimate 4×4 experience.
