NEW GOLF GTI
From kasi streets to coastal highways, few hot hatches have captured the heart of South Africa quite like the Golf GTI. With a global fanbase and more than 2.3 million units sold, it remains the original icon of its class – a benchmark that others still measure themselves against. Now, the legend moves into its next chapter, arriving with more power, sharper design and smarter technology to reinforce its status as the people’s performance car.
The new Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0 TSI engine producing 195kW, up from the previous 180kW, with 370Nm of torque delivered between 1 600 and 4 500 rpm. Mated exclusively to a seven-speed DSG transmission, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250km/h. As always, the GTI strikes a balance between everyday usability and thrilling performance, offering drivers a car that feels equally at home in city traffic or on an open stretch of highway.
A core strength of the GTI lies in its running gear, which has been further refined for even greater precision and agility. Progressive steering, a front-axle differential lock, the Vehicle Dynamics Manager and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) all work together to deliver sharp turn-in, improved traction and enhanced stability.
Visually, the new GTI has been sharpened without losing its unmistakable identity. Newly developed LED Plus headlights give the front end a cleaner, more assertive look, seamlessly integrated into the grille. A horizontal LED strip comes standard, complemented by the signature red line that has defined the GTI since 1976. For the first time, the Volkswagen logo at the front is illuminated, adding to the distinctive light signature.
At the rear, redesigned LED taillight clusters create a fresh and modern appearance, while in profile the GTI remains instantly recognisable thanks to red-on-chrome GTI lettering near the A-pillars and newly developed 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels designed exclusively for GTI models.
Inside, the cabin blends heritage with cutting-edge technology. The infotainment system has been completely redesigned, now based on Volkswagen’s fourth-generation modular platform (MIB4). The Discover Pro system with navigation is standard, operated through a large 12.9-inch (32.8 cm) free-standing touchscreen featuring new graphics and a simplified structure for more intuitive use. The tablet-style display enhances both functionality and visual appeal.
Traditional GTI elements remain central to the interior experience. Premium sport seats with integrated head restraints are upholstered in Vienna leather, accented by red decorative stitching on the seats, centre armrest, floor mats and multifunction sports steering wheel. The perforated leather steering wheel features GTI lettering and red detailing, while the Engine/Start/Stop button pulses red before ignition – a subtle but distinctive reminder of the car’s performance DNA. Brushed stainless steel pedal caps and a black headliner round off the sporty ambience.
Priced at R908 000 (VAT and emissions tax included), the new Golf GTI comes standard with a 3-year/120 000km warranty, a five-year/90 000km EasyDrive Service Plan, a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty and 15 000km service intervals – ensuring that this next chapter of the GTI story in Mzansi is as reassuring as it is exhilarating.
