NEW BMW X2 M35i xDRIVE
The second-generation BMW X2 M35i has arrived in South Africa, bringing a compelling combination of performance, style, and versatility. With its bold M Sport body package, the X2 M35i presents a dynamic look with flared arches and aggressive lines. But beyond its sporty exterior, the X2 M35i is designed for both exhilarating drives and everyday comfort, thanks to its adjustable drive modes that let it seamlessly switch between performance and efficiency.
At the core of the X2 M35i is BMW’s most powerful M Performance 4-cylinder engine, a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol unit that delivers 233 kW and 400 Nm. This power propels the X2 from 0 to 100 kph in just 5.4 seconds. Paired with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, it ensures excellent traction and quick gear shifts for a dynamic driving experience.
The X2 M35i also features an M Sport suspension system with adjustable modes, offering a choice between sportiness, comfort, or economy. Its M Sport braking system with fixed calipers and large steel discs ensures exceptional stopping power. The M sports steering, known for its precision and directness, enhances the agility and handling, making the X2 M35i feel responsive and connected to the road.
Visually, the X2 M35i is designed to turn heads, with full HD main headlights, new side air intakes for optimal cooling, and a rear boot spoiler. The 19-inch wheels finished in Cerium Grey give it an athletic stance, while the M Sport exhaust system produces a distinctive exhaust note that complements its high-performance character.
Inside, the X2 M35i offers a spacious and premium cabin, with options like M Sport bucket seats and an M leather steering wheel with shift paddles. The large wrap-around infotainment screen running BMW’s Operating System 9 provides an intuitive interface, and the optional full-colour BMW Head-Up Display ensures you stay focused on the road. The interior’s flexibility makes it suitable for both daily commuting and weekend trips, with ample space for passengers and cargo.
Despite its performance-oriented nature, the X2 M35i remains surprisingly economical, particularly in urban driving conditions, thanks to the efficiency of the 2.0-litre engine. It’s also ready for off-road adventures, thanks to its all-wheel-drive system. This combination of practicality and performance is a key selling point for the X2 M35i.
Priced at R1 223 935, the X2 M35i sits at the top of the local X2 lineup, offering significantly more power than the sDrive18i M Sport, which starts at R879 738. The M35i’s 233 kW engine makes it the most powerful M Performance 4-cylinder in BMW’s current range, particularly when compared to the detuned version available in Europe.
The new X2 is larger than its predecessor, with gains in length, width, and height, providing more interior and cargo space. The coupé-like exterior design, highlighted by a sharp kidney grille and rear spoiler, gives the X2 M35i an athletic, sophisticated look.
In South Africa, BMW has focused on petrol variants, with no diesel or electric versions currently available, leaving the X2 M35i as the standout model. This focus may change in the future, but for now, the X2 M35i is a strong contender in the luxury compact SUV segment, offering performance and practicality for young professionals.
