MINI COOPER S
The new Mini Cooper S builds on the brand’s legendary go-kart-like driving dynamics, combining thrilling performance, sharp handling and delivering a fun and engaging driving experience that only a Mini can. Now even more technologically savvy and sophisticated, the new Cooper S makes the A to B just that much more fun thanks to its nimble size and power to weight ratio. The brand continues to offer a distinctive sporty alternative to traditional compact cars.
The Cooper S features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 189 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque, providing excellent acceleration and immediate throttle response at speed, making it great for both city driving and spirited cornering. Power is delivered to tarmac via a seven-speed automatic gearbox and it is quick with 0-100km in just 6.6 seconds! However, we did find the lack of paddle shifts alongside the steering wheel hampered the level of performance compared to previous editions. The true magic, however, lies in the Cooper S handling thanks to its small footprint, low centre of gravity, and precise steering. The Cooper S feels remarkably connected to the road at all times. Whether navigating tight urban streets or tackling winding country roads, the car’s suspension setup and steering is designed to keep you engaged.
The new Cooper S comes with multiple driving modes, including a dedicated Go Cart mode, which sharpens the throttle response, stiffens the suspension, and enhances the steering feel. This mode further accentuates the Mini’s go-kart qualities, making the car even more eager with exhaust notes to match. In contrast, the Comfort mode softens the suspension for a more relaxed, everyday drive, perfect for cruising or longer journeys where a smoother ride is preferred. We were particularly impressed with the level of comfort you get in the new Mini compared to its predecessors, thanks to enhanced suspension dampening. For those looking to maximise fuel efficiency, there is also a Green mode which optimises the engine and other systems.
The Mini Cooper S retains the classic styling cues that have made it an iconic vehicle over the years, while also introducing modern touches. Union Jack tail-lights, and sleek lines give the car a youthful and energetic look. The car is available in a range of vibrant colors and trims, allowing for plenty of customisation.
Inside, the Mini Cooper S mixes sporty appeal with modern luxury, the interior comprises of a mix of materials which was interesting to see and gives the cabin a youthful appeal. At the centre of the interior is a large round 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that integrates with Mini’s latest software, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. The one thing I did miss were dedicated buttons for certain more menial tasks, which meant you needed to navigate the software instead.
Prices start at R595 000 for the Mini Cooper 3-Door Hatch, the 5-Door Hatch at R617 000 and the SE 3-Door Hatch at R802 000.
With super quick acceleration and agile handling, the new Cooper S adds another dimension to it’s fun-to-drive personality.
