FORD RANGER RAPTOR
The Ford Ranger Raptor has long been a favourite among South African bakkie enthusiasts, blending rugged off-road capability with high-performance engineering. New Raptor retains its aggressive, tough-truck aesthetic looks that made its predecessor iconic but elevates it with a more purposeful and integrated design. The flared wheel arches and a bold “F-O-R-D” grille and Striking Matrix LED C-clamp headlights are enough to intimidate many a rear-view mirror but where you will really begin to see the Raptor shine is watching it tackle the harshest of terrains. Even the headlights with dynamic bending lights, glare-free high beams, and auto dynamic leveling will testify by offering enhanced visibility on tough off-road trails.
The new Raptor rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with 285/70 R17 BF Goodrich KO2 all-terrain tyres, ensuring grip in harsh conditions. At the rear, a raised tow bar and step pad improve its departure angle to 25 degrees, enhancing off-road capability. New colours such as Code Orange and Conquer Grey add a vibrant, adventurous look to the model differentiation.
At the heart of the new Raptor is its new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 EcoBoost petrol engine, replacing the previous model’s 2.0-litre diesel. This powerhouse produces 292 kW and 583 Nm – nearly double the output of the older version. The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox and a permanent four-wheel-drive system for seamless instantaneous power delivery.
Performance gets a further boost from an advanced two-speed transfer case, locking differentials on both axles, and a rally-style anti-lag system in Baja mode that keeps the turbos spinning even after lifting off the throttle. Drivers can tailor performance using seven drive modes: Normal, Rock, Slippery, Mud & Ruts, Sand, Sport, and Baja. A four-mode exhaust system: Quiet, Normal, Sport, and Baja – allows drivers to control the vehicle’s aggressive soundtrack.
Built for the toughest terrain, the Raptor’s chassis is reinforced with stronger mounts and features redesigned suspension components. Aluminium upper and lower control arms and a long-travel setup provide flexibility and strength. At its core are 2.5-inch FOX Live Valve shocks with position sensitive damping that adjusts in real time for changing surfaces. Enhanced underbody protection, including a 2.3 mm high-strength steel front bash plate, helps it handle rugged trails confidently.
The cabin is inspired by fighter jets, with bolstered sports seats, Code Orange trim, and ambient lighting. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch SYNC 4A infotainment system dominates the dash. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system enhance comfort and connectivity. Paddle shifters and a leather-wrapped steering wheel add to the performance feel.
Standard tech includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera. The FordPass app allows remote vehicle access via FordPass Connect. Despite its high price, it offers arguably decent value through the four-year/120 000 km warranty along with Road-side Assistance.
Imported from Thailand, the Raptor is already enjoying strong demand. It competes with the Jeep Gladiator and VW Amarok but stands out for its rally DNA and extreme capabilities.
