FORD EVEREST XLT
Ford South Africa has expanded its next-generation Everest line-up from two to six models, broadening its appeal across a wider range of buyers. We were fortunate to get behind the wheel of the Everest XLT 4×4 version, also available in 4×2. Our drive showed it offers everything you could need from a vehicle in South Africa. Though the most affordable in the range, the XLT comes fully loaded with features. A mix of comfort, tech, performance, and safety makes Ford’s Everest XLT a compelling option for families or adventurers who don’t want to compromise on quality.
Powering the Everest XLT is a very capable 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel, delivering 154 kW and 500 Nm. The performance is impressive considering the Everest weighs just over three tonnes. You understand why Ford named it after one of the world’s tallest mountains – it lives up to its name in sheer size!
All that power is fed through a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission, offering quick power delivery and decent fuel efficiency – we averaged a comfortable 10.3l/100 km. While we didn’t test the 3.5T towing rating, the engine performed admirably whether on city streets or off-road, delivering a responsive and enjoyable driving experience.
From the outside, the Everest XLT looks imposing thanks to its bold proportions, 18-inch alloy rims, and chunky all-road tyres. Chrome accents and colour-coded mirrors and doorhandles add a classy feel. C-Clamp LED daytime lights bring a touch of sophistication, while its high clearance gives it strong road presence.
Inside, the XLT includes partial leather trim for all seven seats, and eight-way power adjustment for the front seats. Our test unit had optional full leather, likely the only extra you’d ever need. A 12-inch portrait touchscreen running Ford’s SYNC 4A infotainment system dominates the dashboard. Unlike rivals, Ford wisely keeps physical buttons for core functions like climate control, making operation simpler while driving. Connectivity is excellent, with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB-A/C ports, and 12V sockets for all passengers.
The Everest XLT 4×4 features a part-time electronic 4WD system with selectable 2H, 4H, and 4L modes, plus a rear diff lock for rougher terrain. It shares six selectable drive modes with high-spec models like the Wildtrak and Platinum, making it very capable off-road. Its suspension is equally impressive, easily smoothing out rugged terrain.
Ford has loaded the XLT with a host of advanced safety features. These include dual front, side, and curtain airbags, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Pre-Collision Assist with Forward Collision Warning and Auto Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping System with Road Edge Detection, Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert and Trailer Coverage, Reverse Brake Assist, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control (4×4 only), and front/rear parking sensors with a rearview camera. All of this makes the XLT one of the safest in its class – ideal for school runs or weekend escapes.
Practical features include smart keyless entry (which can be disabled) and a powered tailgate – great for shopping trips. The flexible seating configuration offers excellent utility, from carrying seven passengers to maximising cargo space.
