FORD TRANSIT CUSTOM

Ford has introduced their new Transit Custom starting with the long wheelbase Van and promising more models later this year. Having claimed Europe’s best-selling one-ton award, the new model promises even more, thanks to consumer feedback which was incorporated into ergonomic design. To test this out we were given a list of donation delivery tasks on behalf of the Ford Motor company, our mission: deliver beds and blankets to the SOS Children’s’ Home in Mamolodi and doggy treat deliveries to the SPCA.

Ford engineers really took the new Transit Custom platform to task by making the body 100 kg’s lighter ensuring a stiffer build compared to its predecessor, and improving performance and handling while maintaining increased cargo space. There’s even a 13% reduction in aerodynamic drag due to lowered vehicle height which now offers great maneuverability in and out of parking areas and better mileage and fuel consumption.

Under the bonnet is Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, delivering 100 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque. It’s paired to a six-speed manual transmission that offers selectable drive modes for different driving conditions.

Deliveries were a combination of highway and suburban township driving which helped ‘delivery vehicle specialists’ gain a better understanding of just how effortless the new Transit Custom is to operate and it’s fun to live with on a day-to-day basis. With more than ample power to tug it’s 1.3T towing capacity I was astonished at our combined 7.4 litre/100 km average fuel consumption for our efforts on the day. It really isn’t any wonder the van has been voted best in class for so many years.

The Transit Custom’s practicality shines through its comprehensive list of standard features, including a larger side door with an integrated step for easier cargo access. Inside, the van offers a spacious load compartment with amenities such as tie-down loops, enhanced LED lighting, and optional extras such as dual sliding side doors and a foldable roof rack.

Supporting the Transit Custom’s robust capabilities is a new semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension system that lowers the floor height by 100 mm. This innovation not only helps with easier loading but also improves steering precision and traction, crucial for navigating various terrains and urban environments.

The cabin features a flat floor layout and electronic handbrake, ensuring a comfortable driving experience even during long shifts.  A large 13-inch touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 4 operating system, with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto covers seamless connectivity.

Safety remains first class with advanced features such as ABS brakes, stability control, and a comprehensive suite of ADAS technology. These include Collision Mitigation, Lane Keeping Aid, and Emergency Brake Assist, supported by six airbags and sensors for enhanced situational awareness.

In terms of security, the Transit Custom offers Keyless Entry and Start, robust power door deadlocks, and an immobiliser system. Optional upgrades include a Thatcham Category 1 alarm for added peace of mind against theft.

Overall, the new Transit Custom sets a high standard in the commercial vehicle market, blending innovation with practicality to meet the evolving needs of customers. Its combination of efficiency, technology, and safety features ensures it’s ready to tackle the challenges of modern-day business operations.

TRAINING

Knowledge is power. Training is key to up-skilling repairers as models launch onto our local roads faster than we can count. We also need to grow new talent into the collision repair industry. Courses are available to help and organisations are in place to train – this information is in Industry Index.
