BMW X3 M50 xDRIVE
After BMW South Africa’s R4.2 billion investment to hybridise Rosslyn’s X3 production line in 2023, the automaker has produced over 403 114 new-generation X3s in petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants for export to 40 countries, including 14 in Africa. The X3 has impressed South Africans so much that it was named the 2025 South African Car of the Year.
It was therefore exciting to get behind the wheel of the new BMW X3 M50, built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA, which produces the marque’s M Performance SUVs.
The X3 M50 sits at the top of the new X3 range and perfectly blends everyday practicality with impressive performance. Its sleek geometric design, flared wheel arches, illuminated kidney grille, and signature M styling give it a dynamic stance, while 20-inch M alloy wheels, quad exhausts, and a rear spoiler reinforce its sporty identity.
Under the bonnet lies BMW’s most powerful six-cylinder petrol engine ever fitted to an M Performance X3. The 3.0-litre turbocharged engine with 48V mild-hybrid assistance produces 293 kW, launching from 0–100 km/h in 4.6 seconds – performance on par with many sports cars. Power is delivered through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission to all four wheels, ensuring smooth, rapid acceleration and excellent grip in all conditions.
Standard M Sport features include adaptive suspension, sport steering, powerful brakes, and an M Sport differential for agile cornering and outstanding control. In Sport mode, the X3 M50 feels sharp and composed; switch to Comfort mode and it transforms into a quiet, efficient everyday cruiser. The autonomous highway assist system – activated from the steering wheel – manages speed and following distance, easing long commutes.
Inside, the cabin combines luxury and sustainability, with premium materials and a modern design featuring recycled polyester knitted dash fabric. Highlights include heated sport seats, a new flat-bottom steering wheel, and BMW’s curved digital display running Operating System 9, which emphasises voice and touch control. While the clean, minimalist dashboard looks futuristic, more physical buttons for basic functions would improve usability.
Connectivity is excellent, with a wireless charging pad, four USB-C ports, and 12V power sockets in the cabin and luggage area. A fixed panoramic glass sunroof enhances the sense of space, and the outstanding sound system creates a concert-like experience.
The new X3 also raises the bar for semi-automated driving. Standard features include front collision warning, lane departure warning, and speed limit information, while the Driving Assistant package adds lane change warning and manual speed limit assist. The Reversing Assistant and Reversing Camera make tight parking effortless, adding to its high-tech appeal.
Overall, the BMW X3 M50 is a thrilling and sophisticated all-rounder that balances power, comfort, and technology with everyday practicality. Whether tackling a daily commute or an open-road adventure, it delivers a premium driving experience that justifies its flagship status.
