AWARD WINNING WATERBORNE TECHNOLOGY FROM GLASURIT

In 1888, founder Max Winkelmann started his paint and enamel company in Hamburg, Germany and this enterprise came to be known as Glasurit. This enterprise would later have its first success in 1893 with “Crystal White,” an enamel applied to ocean liners. In 1964 Glasurit introduced 54 Line, the first metallic basecoat line for automotive refinishing. A year later, BASF acquired Glasurit. To this day, the brand continues to stand for the highest quality refinish paint in the aftermarket industry.

As the BASF premium paint line, Glasurit has offered world-class quality paired with advanced German technologies for more than 100 years. When looking at the Glasurit portfolio, its main focus is on body shops. However, OEMs also trust the paint brand – Glasurit has earned more OEM approvals than any other on the market. The innovative Glasurit 90 Line paint system helps customers take their businesses to the next level, improve their environmental footprint and drive overall performance.

Launched in 1992, the Glasurit 90 Line, a waterborne metallic and solid-colour basecoat/clearcoat finishing system, has since been an award-winning market leader in automotive refinishing. This paint system offers superior quality, outstanding coverage, ease-of-use and a long-lasting shine. Body shops choose Glasurit 90 Line due to its low solvent content – making it better for the environment, resulting in quick application and flash-off times, and short dwell times in the booth.

Glasurit is committed to waterborne technology and is the market leader in this field. The 90 Line paint system boasts 20% savings in material compared to older systems, and competing products consume up to 40% more material. These are only two of the arguments that speak for the 90 Line paint system.

Glasurit products are created to work together as a system and provide a quality, long-lasting finish. Glasurit basecoats, clearcoats and primers have specific chemical components that are designed to link to each other so that each layer in the coating film is compatible with the others. By adhering to the system principles, Glasurit provides logical, easy-to-use, efficient, and reliable products that yield world-class finishes.

BASF’s Glasurit 90 Line automotive refinish also offers the Colour Advance Boosters that increase efficiency and performance for challenging red, blue and green colours. The boosters provide a higher pigment concentration to reduce the number of coats required to achieve that flawless repair.

“Our Glasurit chemists developed these boosters to significantly improve hiding and still provide a high quality Glasurit finish for many tri-coats, metallics and vivid colours,” said Marius Nel, Technical Training Manager, BASF Coatings Services South Africa. “The boosters can reduce base consumption by up to 50%, resulting in lower film thickness, faster drying and reduced process times.”

The Colour Advance Boosters are available in a white, three red, three blue and two green boosters. When added to the Glasurit 90 Line toners they enable a more even application and harder curing, allowing for better ease-of-use, improved tape resistance and easier sanding.

Glasurit is the preferred premium paint line for car enthusiasts in South Africa and around the world. For world-class shine and unbeatable gloss, experts in many industries turn to Glasurit for a finish they can trust.

Classic COrner & REStoration

Classic cars are the next big investment. As such the sector of restoration is growing in the realms of collision repair and it’s definitely the “sexier” side of the business. There are many opportunities to create exotic special-builds as well as keep timeless beauties in mint condition.

DRIVEN

With three motoring-journalists on our staff, we are able to test drive and review some of the latest models available on our roads as well as attend the latest model launches.

TRAINING

Knowledge is power. Training is key to up-skilling repairers as models launch onto our local roads faster than we can count. We also need to grow new talent into the collision repair industry. Courses are available to help and organisations are in place to train - this information is in Industry Index.
